Why has President Trump been getting a “free pass” during the 2020 presidential campaign regarding numerous credible allegations of sexual harassment and other misconduct, as well and long-term extramarital affairs? It probably has something to do with the American public’s short attention span and the fact that 30% or more of the electorate has drunk the Trump Kool-Aid and love the guy regardless of his heinous behavior.

During the 2016 campaign, we should have seen enough when a tape was released by Access Hollywood showing Trump and television host Billy Bush having a lewd and raunchy conversation about women way back in 2005. As part of the interview, a very confident Trump boasted that when you are a star of his magnitude you can just start kissing women and grab anyone you like by the p*ssy.

By the fall of 2017, seventeen women had come forward with accusations against the president [Note: by September 2020, the number has increased to twenty-six]. Also in the Fall of 2017, Senator Al Franken was forced out of office because of an accusation of sexual impropriety from one woman. Shouldn’t Trump be held to the same standard? The accusations and testimony from these seventeen women should have been enough to create a groundswell of public opinion regarding Trump’s unsuitability for the presidency. He should have been ousted seventeen times faster! Trump is a noticeable and regrettable failure of the high-effective #MeToo movement that brought down countless men across the country with sexual misconduct that pales in comparison to the president’s behavior.

If I were a Democratic strategist, I would still make Trump’s misogyny a 2020 campaign issue. We cannot let Trump skate on such egregious behavior. We cannot let the Groper in Chief think that he has lulled the whole country into a state of forgetfulness. This isn’t the most important campaign issue, but Trump’s behavior over many years has been very bad and we should not give him a “free pass!”
